Research interests and activities

A bit of background:
I graduated in translation at the SSLMIT of the University of Bologna at Forlì, Italy, in 1997, with a degree dissertation on corpora and language learning (published by CLUEB in 2000).
In 1999 I got an Mphil in English and Applied Linguistics from the University of Cambridge, UK.
In 2000 I left the PhD programme at Cambridge and came back to Italy to take on a research contract at Forlì.
Soon after, I started a part-time long-distance PhD at the University of Middlesex, UK, under the joint supervision of Kirsten Malmkjær, one of my former Cambridge lecturers, now Professor of Literary Translation and Translation Theory at MDX, and of my dissertation supervisor at SSLMIT, Guy Aston.
My PhD research is a corpus-based study of collocations in translated and original texts. I'm still struggling with it. In the meantime, I have taught English linguistics and CAT tools at SSLMIT, worked as a free-lance translator (occasionally), lectured and written, mainly on corpora and translation (description, practice and learning) and corpora and language learning.

Current interests and activities:
The CEXI project
I am currently working at the construction of a parallel bidirectional corpus of English and Italian at the Department of Intercultural Studies on Translation, Languages and Cultures (SITLEC) of the University of Bologna at Forlì.
Languages in contrast
Together with Stig Johansson and Hilde Hasselgård (Oslo), in 2002 I've taken on editorship of the International contrastive linguistics Journal Languages in contrast (John Benjamins).
With substantial help and encouragement from Marco Baroni, I have started to learn the basics of perl programming. At the moment, we are working at an xml-aware parallel concordancer.
